Ruth Bell GrahamForwarded from Casey:

Dear friend of Wheaton College,Today we join countless others around the world in mourning the death of Ruth Bell Graham, wife of evangelist Billy Graham and, with Billy, a 1943 graduate of the College.

Everyone knows Billy Graham, but few beyond the Graham family and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association fully appreciate how crucial Ruth was to Billy’s success. Strong, steady, and dauntless, Ruth Bell Graham was the glue that held the many parts of the Grahams’ lives together. As a child of missionaries in China, Ruth brought a broad horizon to their relationship. Billy credits her with raising the Graham children while he was preaching the Gospel to audiences around the world.

In her later years Ruth suffered cruelly with degenerative arthritis. Yet she kept involved in others’ lives and never complained about her health. She was more interested in others than she was in herself. Like her husband, Ruth loved the Scriptures and the Savior they tell of. She was also a wonderful supporter of Wheaton College and its people. We are grateful to be able to claim her as an alumna of the College and to celebrate hers as a life so well-lived.

As a Wheaton College student Ruth Bell majored in Bible and was active in the Foreign Missions Fellowship and Scripture Distribution Society. She also served on the Student Council her sophomore year. It was at Wheaton that Ruth met her future husband, a tall, thin fellow student named William F. Graham. They married after both graduated in 1943 and began their life of ministry together.

Ruth Graham’s service to the Lord Jesus made a difference for her family, for all who knew her, and for her alma mater. In 1975, she received an honorary doctorate from the College. In 1993 she and Billy returned to campus for their class’s 50th reunion. There Ruth helped dedicate the newly remodeled Williston Hall. In 1999 the College honored her with the Distinguished Service to Family award. She also served as a College trustee from 1975-1982.

In her book It’s My Turn, Ruth Graham shared stories from her life as a child, student, wife, mother, and grandmother, drawing spiritual lessons from life’s relationships. In one vignette she includes the observation, “Someone has said, ‘A Christian is one who makes it easy to believe in Jesus.’” By that standard, Ruth’s life was a success. A great many have found it easier to walk with the Lord for having known Ruth Bell Graham.

More information on Mrs. Graham’s life can be found at the College’s website, www.wheaton.edu or at www.bgea.org. In addition, various campus groups, including the Billy Graham Center Museum, are remembering her through exhibits and online galleries. As one of our alumni, you may have recollections of Ruth as a student or other Wheaton-related memories about her. If so, you may send them to the Alumni Relations office at alumni@wheaton.edu. Your story might be used in the Wheaton magazine, online, or elsewhere.

We give thanks to God for the life and witness of Ruth Bell Graham who today is with her Lord, Jesus Christ.

Warmly,

Duane Litfin
President
Wheaton College

Prayer Requests 6.12

1. Brett. Praise that Brett’s dad is asking a lot about God. Prayer regarding a new work opportunity.

2. Jeremy. Praise for a great Men’s Advance this weekend PRayer that he would stop his “endless introspection” and learn to be focused on Jesus.

3. Adriel. Prayer that she will find her lost keys so she doesn’t have to go through the process to get a new pair made or her building re-keyed.

4. Elizabeth. Prayer for discernment regarding a new job opportunity in an area where she has always wanted to work.

5. Demetrius. Praise that his dad came to church on Sunday. Praise that they had a great conversation that was genuine & intimate.

6. Tyler. Prayer for his dentist appointment on Monday.

7. Ligia. Prayer for contentment and endurance to continue in the work that God has called her to in her time of singleness.

8. Heather. Praise that she had a great meeting with ‘the family’ and the possibility of working with them. Prayer regarding another opportunity she has to do philanthropic work. Praise that her job and her calling in life may intertwine. Praise that her sister is marrying a man who loves the Lord and for the redemption God has brought to her life and her finance’s life.

9. Gavin. Praise and prayer that Gain is going to lead a substance abuse group through Mars Hill.

10. Dayna. Praise that she has contacted her dad and sisters after many years of not communicating with them. Prayer for her meeting with them and her future relationship with them.

11. Katie. I’ll be down in LA for work for the next two Tuesdays and I desperately need favor at work. My responsibilities are quickly growing and the work climate is pretty hostile. My co-worker got drunk at a social event and told me the office secrets – mainly that the office is a ‘non-religious’ atmosphere and that Christian’s don’t last long. So it seems I have my work cut out for me (both in the literal sense and the spiritual sense).

12. Nick. Prayer for the pastor’s meeting this week and the decisions they will be making about the future of Mars Hill Church.

Reforming the Feminine

Reforming the Feminine. You’re invited to join a handful of Mars Hill women as they exchange their ashes for beauty, fear for strength, mourning for gladness, filth for purity. This is where all that stuff we hear in church and read from our Bibles and know about Jesus in our heads… finds its way into the moments when we’re stuck in traffic, annoyed at work, can’t find our kids at the park, and we feel unlovable and stupid. This is the battlefield of the old woman vs. the new woman. Who will win? It could be ugly. It could be hilarious. It will definitely be humbling… but:

“He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.” (Phil. 1:6)

So far blog posts have covered topics from Jane Fonda to Underage Drinking to Fashion … and there are many more to come! We invite you to read the more at: http://voxpopnetwork.com/refem. Please read, comment, and forward to other MH women who would benefit from the blog, the newest edition to the Vox Pop network!
